The YVGMS workshop was opened to educate the general public in lapidary arts.  The workshop is staffed with knowledgable experts and the necessary equipment to complete almost any lapidary project.  Training is provided to anyone wishing to use the shop.  Periodically, classes are provided on specific subjects.

Sunday 1 PM to 5 PM
Monday 6 PM to 9 PM
Wednesday 6 PM to 9 PM
Friday 6 PM to 9 PM
Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WORKSHOP
 
Do I have to be a YVGMS member to use the shop or attend classes?
No.  The workshop is open for use by ALL CLUBS and the general public, provided the following conditions are met;
1)  Everyone attending the workshop must sign the attendance record before entering the workshop area.
2)  Members and visitors must register and pay the shop fee each time before starting work.
3)  If you are a visitor (non-YVGMS member), you are welcome to use the facilities if, first, you have been instructed and certified, and pay the fee (a YVGMS shop committee member will verify that you know how to use the equipment).
4)  A parent or adult sponsor must accompany any minors, and the adult will be held responsible for the child's behavior.

Do I need my own rocks?
No.  The club has rocks for sale to be used in the workshop.  The rocks are not for sale to dealers to be resold.
 
Will you teach me how?
Yes.  You will be instructed and certified on the use of all equipment.
 
Can I take classes?
Yes.  The workshop has classes on several different subjects (see below).
 
How much will I pay to use the workshop?
The session fee is $7.00.  There are other fees for using specific equipment, including:
30" saw fee:  The fee for slab sawing on the big saw is determined by the square inch and rock hardness according to the Mohs Scale (hardness = 1 to 5:  5 cents per square inch; 6 to 9:  10 cents per square inch).  There is a hardness chart displayed at the shop for your convenience.

CLASSES
 
What classes are available?
At various times throughout the year, YVGMS members offer classes in the following areas:  wire wrapping, silver smithing, casting, beading, carving, cabochon making, wind chimes, fountains, table tops, and more.  Sign up at the shop or general meetings.
 
How much does a class cost?
The price varies, depending on the complexity of the activity, but generally the classes are less than $10.  Students are expected to also pay for materials used during the class, and this might include purchase of tools if the student does not already possess them.
 
Do I have to be a YVGMS member to attend a class?
No; the workshop rules regarding membership applies (see above).
